Nancy was born on May 12, 1937 in Lowe, KS, the eldest of 6 children born to Floyd and Marjorie Goode. She graduated from Cedar Vale High School and William Newton Nursing School in Winfield KS. She met her future husband, Walter Schmid, at Winfield State Training School where she was employed as a nurse and Walter was doing his Internal Medicine Residency. They were married on June 12, 1960 in Winfield KS. Shortly thereafter, Walter enlisted as a Captain in the Army and was assigned to Idar-Oberstein, Germany where their first daughter, Lynne, was born. They returned to Rochester, Minnesota for Walt’s Gastroenterology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic where their son, Brad, and daughter, Laura, were born. In 1967, they moved to Cheyenne WY where he founded Internal Medicine Group and where their last daughter, Gretchen, was born.
