Adell VanPatten-Gorny, 63, of Cheyenne passed away June 22, 2017, at Davis Hospice Center. Adell was born July 27, 1953, in Lincoln, NE, to John and Shirley Weihing. In 1975, she graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University attaining a Bachelor of Science degree in three years. She held the position of adjunct professor of English at the University of Alaska, Anchorage Community and Technical College. Adell and Dan Gorny, her husband of 30 years, met on blind date set up by his sister and her brother in the summer of 1986. They enjoyed bird hunting, fishing and camping in the greater Wyoming area. Adell achieved her Master of Arts degree in adult education from the University of Wyoming in 1990. She served as the Director of Chapman University, F.E. Warren Air Force Base Academic Center. Adell concluded her career as the Assistant Director of the State of Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board. She retired in 2007. Adell's passion was quilting. Her works, which were incredibly beautiful and intricate, will live on as her legacy. She was a member of the Cheyenne Heritage Quilters and the Material Girls. We all will all miss Adell's true fighting spirit. Adell is survived by her husband, Dan Gorny of Cheyenne; mother, Shirley Weihing of Gering, NE; brothers, Lawson (Debbie) Weihing of Omaha, NE; Martin (Maria) Weihing of Chicago, IL; and Warren Weihing of Boise, ID. She was preceded in death by her father, Nebraska State Senator John Weihing. Those who wish may contribute to the Cheyenne Heritage Quilters, P O Box 21194, Cheyenne, 82003, in Adell's honor. A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 15, in the Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home followed by a reception in the Schrader Reception Center.
