Mrs. Anne (Pitchick) Messner, 97, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, formerly of Clifton, New Jersey, passed away of natural causes on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at the Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne. Mrs. Messner was born January 6, 1916, in Garfield, NJ, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Emma (Krasnimska) Pitchick. Anne was the owner of Messner's Sporting Goods in Clifton along with her late husband, Martin "Mack" Messner, for over 42 years. She was a pioneer in the sporting goods business and was one of the first women in the industry. She and her husband actively sponsored and supported athletic leagues such as the Little League, Babe Ruth League and bowling leagues from 1948-78. Mack and Anne were very active in starting the Little League in Clifton which now has more than 35 divisions including Midgets, Little League and Babe Ruth League. Their granddaughter continued in the athletic field and is the owner of Westy's Gymnastics in Hardyston, NJ, for the past 18 years. Anne is survived by two daughters, Barbara Pick of Cheyenne, and Gail Benbenek of Wantage, New Jersey; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Martin "Mack" Messner; and a daughter, Doris Parker. A Vigil for the Deceased will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at the Schrader Chapel. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home.
