Anthony Lucero

April 27, 1933 — July 5, 2011

Anthony A. Lucero passed away in his home in Harlingen, Texas on July 5, 2011 after a brief illness. He left behind a wonderful legacy with his wife Deena; three step-daughters, Donna (Bill) Edwards, Denver CO, Dede (Rick) Hunter, Lander WY, and Terri (Jim) Dawson, Buffalo, WY; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; four surviving sisters, Lillian Montoya, Mesa AZ, Dillia (Dan) Sylvester, West Warwick, RI, Helen Kowalsky, Anchorage AK, and Mary Christine (Randy) Vickers, Laramie WY; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in his death by his parents, Rube and Helen Korte Lucero; his sister, Fanny Kennedy; and his brother, Rube William Lucero. Tony (aka Uncle Tony/ Papaw) was a proud native of Cheyenne, Wyoming, born on April 27, 1933. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1951. He then went to work for Mountain Bell as a lineman, but that career was interrupted when he was drafted into the US Army and served in the US Air Force from 1953 to 1955. He returned to "Ma Bell" and simultaneously attended the University of Wyoming, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in business in 1960. His career with the phone company flourished and he moved up into management. His life became complete when he met his wife Deena Mangan, and they were wed in March of 1974. Tony retired from US West-formerly Mountain Bell, in 1985. He and Deena traveled during the summers to almost every state in the US in their motor home, even after building a home in Harlingen, Texas, in 1995. They shared their summers with Deena's three daughters who called Tony "Papaw" and claimed him as their own Dad. Fishing was Tony's favorite sport and eating his catch was his second favorite! Both he and Deena were accomplished square dancers and in later years became avid bird watchers. There wasn't anything around the house or cars that he couldn't repair, and there was always a list of to do's for him when visiting his daughters. Papaw's most cherished times were being surrounded by his adoring family. He was truly the Patriarch and will be missed more than words can express. He was cremated and his life will be celebrated at two memorial services. The first will be a Vigil for the Deceased on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the Schrader Chapel with a Funeral Liturgy to be celebrated on Friday, September 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne. Father Michael Carr will serve as celebrant. An interment service will follow at Olivet Cemetery. The second service will be in Harlingen in early winter and the date is pending at this time. The family is requesting that all donations be sent to Majestic Christian Center (MD Anderson Shuttle Service), 3512 McLean Rd, Pearland, TX 77584. May you rest in peace Papaw and we will see you in heaven!
