Avis Rostron

Avis Dixon Rostron passed away March 11, 2011, at Windsor Healthcare Center in Windsor, Colorado after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born March 13, 1929, in Douglas, Wyoming, the daughter of Lester B. and Garnet H. Dixon. She attended the University of Wyoming and while there joined Alpha Chi Omega sorority and made a number of lifelong friends among her sisters. She graduated with a degree in education. She taught for a couple of years at the high school in Guernsey, Wyoming. She then moved to Casper, Wyoming, and worked for Pan American Petroleum. From Casper she moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and began a career with the Federal Government working at Offutt Air Force Base. She moved to Cheyenne in 1963 taking a job at Warren Air Force Base. She became very involved in federal service, serving as the first Wyoming coordinator for the Federal Woman's Program. She retired from the federal government in 1995 as the Deputy State Director of Administration for the Bureau of Land Management. After retirement, she spent many hours volunteering for several local organizations, among them the Friends of the Symphony, Old West Museum, Women's Civic League and Prevent Child Abuse Wyoming and staying active with Alpha Chi Omega. Avis was an avid golfer including play on the Tuesday Twilight League, loved art collecting and painting, enjoyed many hours in her garden, was a lifelong Denver Bronco fan and loved spending time with her grandsons who were her pride and joy. She was especially proud that both boys are currently enrolled in the University of Wyoming, her alma mater. She is survived by her daughter Mavis and son-in-law, John Earnshaw; and her grandsons, Justin Earnshaw and his fiancée, Shannon Skelcher, and Dylan Earnshaw, all of Cheyenne. She is also survived by her former husband and lifelong friend, Albert "Doug" Rostron of Cheyenne; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester B. Dixon, when she was two years old; her mother, Garnet and beloved stepfather, W.R. "Bill" Silver, and all of her step-siblings. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, March 18, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church with Reverend Sandi Dillon officiating. A Private interment will be held at a later date in Douglas. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home. Friends who wish may contribute to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter or the Old West Museum.
