Mrs. Berniece E. (Rhoades) Holmes, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away at home on the ranch north of Cheyenne on Friday, February 25, 2011. She was 95 years old. Berniece was born august 14, 1915, in Slater, Wyoming, to George D. and Poline M. (Menuey) Rhoades. In 1949, she met and married Floyd and together they enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life working side by side on their ranch for 60 years. She was a charter member of the Laramie County Cowbells. She was also a longtime member of several other organizations including the Cheyenne Women's Club and the Friendly Folks - Laramie County Women's Extension Club. She served numerous years as the Secretary/Treasurer for Laramie County Farm Bureau, and she also volunteered her time as a clerk for Laramie County 4-H sales. She was particularly proud of the fact that in 2010, she and her family celebrated two milestones in ranching: the Holmes Family cattle ranch celebrated a century in ranching, a milestone that Floyd was looking forward to achieving until his death on November 15, 2009, and her maternal grandparents' homestead that celebrated its centennial in 2010. It was also important to her that her parents' homestead, where she was born and raised, reached its centennial in 2010. Berniece is survived by her daughter, Shirley Churchill and husband, Brad, of Fowler, CO; her son, Clyde Holmes and wife, Gail, of Salem, OR; a granddaughter, Meghan Brown and husband, Aaron, of Salem, OR; two great-granddaughters, Keilene and Kasidee Brown, both of Salem; and several nieces, nephews and other family members. She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Floyd R. Holmes, Jr.; her brother, Earnest Rhoades; and her sister, Sylvia E. Rhoades. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, from 4-8 p.m. at the Schrader Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, March 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at the Cheyenne Kiwanis Community House in Lions Park. Interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in Berniece's memory may be made to the Wyoming Children's Society, 314 East 21st Street, Cheyenne, WY 82001, or Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, P.O. Box 2720, Cheyenne, WY 82003.
