Blaine E. Smith, 65, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center on Thursday, June 2, 2016, surrounded by his family. Blaine was born October 7, 1950, in Cheyenne to John and Doris Smith Blaine grew up in Albin, Wyoming, and graduated from Albin High School, Class of 1969. He enlisted in the United States Navy after high school and became a member of the Seabees. He was stationed in Hawaii where he met and married Ann Wenseritt on June 4, 1971. After completing his active duty assignment, they returned to Wyoming where they raised two daughters; Heather Lynn (born 8-8-1974) and Erin Ann (born 7-23-1978). Blaine began working for the City of Cheyenne as a firefighter on July 1, 1972, and later began a career with the Cheyenne Police Department on February 14, 1974. He loved being a police officer and helping people. During his career at the police department. he worked in the Patrol Division, Motorcycle Traffic Unit, K-9 Unit and Detective Division where he was assigned as an undercover narcotics officer until being promoted to the rank of Sergeant in November, 1982. Having been raised in a farming/ranching community, his interest in horses helped him become actively involved in creating a mounted unit for the Cheyenne Police Department. He started contacting various agencies with mounted units for assistance along with the National Mounted Services Organization. After formal training was completed in May, 1989, a five-man unit was assigned mounted duties. He became a certified police instructor in Mounted Horse Patrol and in June, 1990, he was appointed the Rocky Mountain Regional Director of the National Mounted Services Organization. Blaine said that in his entire career he had never enjoyed an assignment as much as his mounted duties. After his retirement from CPD, he was appointed Director of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter from 1990-1991. He then became a private business owner and operated Fix N Mix Liquors for several years. After selling the store, he returned to the City of Cheyenne Parks & Recreation Division for five years, then became a school bus driver for Laramie County School District #1. He was an avid motorcycle rider and met many wonderful people through his association with various riding clubs. He is survived by wife Ann; daughters, Heather (Skip) Calvert, and Erin (Jeremy) Cartwright; grandchildren, Doriann and Matthew Calvert, and Jaci and Archer Cartwright; brother, Jerry (Linda) Smith; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, John and Matthew; infant grandson, Johnathan; brother, Michael; and nephew, Stephen. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Cremation is under the care of Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home.
