Carmel Ann Barrett, 87, of Cheyenne died January 4, 2011, at the Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne. She was born May 31, 1923, in Rawlins to John and Catherine Martinez. She graduated from Rawlins High School in 1941. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas and the University of Wyoming. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at UW. During World War II, she attended Jefferson Medical College Hospital of Philadelphia and earned a diploma in medical technology in 1945. Memorial Hospital of Cheyenne and Dr. David Flett, the first internist in Wyoming, employed her as a medical and x-ray technician. She married James E. Barrett in Rawlins on October 8, 1949. They made their home in Lusk for 18 years. He practiced law in the firm of Barrett & Barrett and she was a homemaker. They and their three children moved to Cheyenne in 1967 after her husband accepted an appointment by Governor Stanley K. Hathaway to serve as Wyoming Attorney General. They remained in Cheyenne after President Richard Nixon appointed her husband in 1971 to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit, headquartered in Denver. She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and was active in Cathedral Guild, hospital auxiliaries, and the choirs at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Lusk and St. Mary’s Cathedral. In later years, she traveled extensively throughout the world and was devoted to opera, theatre, literature, nature and power walking. She especially loved the oceans and the mountains. She possessed a beautiful smile, a marvelous sense of humor and a compassionate heart. She is survived by her husband, Hon. James E. Barrett of Cheyenne; her daughter, Ann Sandahl and her husband, John, of Carlsbad, California; son, Richard Barrett and his wife, Rosemary, of Cheyenne; son, John Barrett of Cheyenne; sister, Jacqueline Ferrall of Cheyenne; sister-in-law, Marialyce Tobin of Casper; granddaughters Elizabeth Sandahl, Caitilin Barrett and Kelly Barrett; grandson, Thomas Sandahl and his wife, Kirsten; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Martinez, and her sisters, Mary Mace of Saratoga and Janet McGovern of Columbus, Ohio. Visitation will be Friday 10:00a.m until 5:00 p.m. at Schrader Funeral Home. A Vigil for the Deceased will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Cheyenne on Friday, January 7, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Ray Moss as celebrant. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception immediately following funeral services at St. Mary’s Hartmann Hall. Interment will be at the Lusk Cemetery on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Felix Martinito officiating. Pallbearers will be Richard Barrett, Thomas Sandahl, John Sandahl, John Ferrall, Patrick Barrett and Larry Barrett.
