Clayton Simons

Clayton Osborn Simons, 51, died June 23 of thyroid cancer at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, Colo. He was born Nov. 5, 1962, in Casper, the son of John Powell and Lynn Osborn Simons. He attended Crest Hill Elementary School, Dean Morgan Junior High School and Natrona County High School. In 1979, he moved with his family to Cheyenne, where he graduated from Cheyenne's Central High in 1981. He played varsity football and basketball for the Central Indians. He began his college career at Laramie County Community College and continued at the University of Wyoming, where he majored in international relations and Russian. After graduation from UW in 1986, he studied Russian at the University of Washington, with a study-abroad program of Ohio State University. Subsequently, he was employed in a variety of positions in Moscow, including the U.S. Embassy and USSR's then only FM radio station. He returned to the states in 1996 and began the enterprise that continued until his death, TCarta Marine. He and a partner provided bathymetric maps to industries such as those in oil and gas exploration and production, environmental research, archaeology, telecommunications and fishing. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Morris P. and Rosalyn Liebenson Simons of San Francisco; maternal grandparents, Robert Blair and Dorothy Briggs Osborn of Golden, Colo.; uncles, Eugene V. Simons of Casper, William L. Simons of Arvada, Colo., Stephen Briggs Osborn of Golden and John Kirk Osborn of Chapel Hill, N.C. He is survived by his brother, William Blair Simons of Denver; parents; uncles, Robert A. Simons of Paramus, N.J., and Robert Blair Osborn Jr. of Seattle; his niece, Madeline Simons of Ocean City, Md., as well as eight cousins on the West and East coasts. The family asks memorials be made to International Relations Department, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Wyoming. A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, 219 W. 27th St., Cheyenne.
