He was born May 7, 1947 in Mansfield, OH to the late Robert Glenn Heichel and Dorothy Mae Farst Heichel. Don (as he affectionately called) enlisted in the United States Army on July 8, 1966. Don was selected for a position as Police Chief in Butler, Ohio. Chief Heichel enjoyed law enforcement; however, he did not remain as chief because of his wide array of interests. He became a forest ranger, search and rescue volunteer and he was self employed for years as the owner and operator of Daylight Donut Shop. Later in life he was a patient at the Veterans Medical Center Long Term Facility. Don loved to travel, fish and hunt. Most of all he loved people. He was also a member of American Legion Post #535 in Belville, OH, the National Rifle Association, the Disabled American Veterans-National Chapter and the Cheyenne Archery Club. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Cheyenne; two sons, Jim Heichel of Columbus, OH and Rob Heichel of Mansfield, OH and daughter-in-law, Jennifer; one granddaughter; a brother, David Heichel of Lexington, OH and sister-in-law of Lexington; three step-sons and a host of nieces and nephews. Don has four beloved pets, Penny, Piper, Missy and Magneto. He is preceded in death by a brother, Dan Heichel and an infant brother.
