Dorothy Mackey Brand

Dorothy Mackey Brand, 94, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away Saturday morning, June 21, 2014 at the Davis Hospice Center. She was born February 26, 1920, in Ramsey, Minnesota, the eighth of nine children to William and Ella Newville. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, and three brothers. On August 7, 1938, she married Harold Mackey; they were married until 1973. In 1982, she moved to Cheyenne, where she lived happily for the rest of her life. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church and was a Foster Grandparent at De Paul Hospital and Pioneer Park School. Dorothy was a member of RSVP for 27 years, serving as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital Pharmacy and the Old West Museum. She was a long-time member of the volunteers at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where she worked at Home Away From Home. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Dorothy was a life-long learner. Although she left high school during the Depression, she completed her GED at Laramie County Community College, graduating at age 75. She loved to read and got her first computer when she was 80. In her nineties, she learned to use Skype to see her family while they visited. She loved her family very much. She is survived by Nancy and Bill Skadden of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Terry and Cathy Mackey of Cheyenne, Ruth and Dennis "Bill" Phillippi of Bozeman, Montana, and Mike and Karen Mackey of Chelan, Washington; ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their families. A memory service will be conducted at the First Congregational Church on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. Friends may contribute to the First Congregational Church, Davis Hospice Center or Meals on Wheels.
