Edward Thompson, Jr.

Edward Merle Thompson, Jr., 92, of Cheyenne, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015. Edward was born June 28, 1923, in Rock Springs, son of the late Edward Merle and Rachel Mae (Starrett) Thompson. He was a 1941 graduate of Rock Springs High School where he was a three sport letterman. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as radio operator and waist gunner on U.S. Army Air Corps B-17 bombers. After the war, he was a crew member on Air Force transport aircraft around the world. For his service, he was awarded the WWII Victory and Good Conduct medals. Edward attended the University of Wyoming and Colorado State College of Education at Greeley, earning a bachelor's and master's degree in industrial arts. He taught industrial arts and coached football, basketball and track at McCormick Junior High School for 36 years, retiring in 1986. He participated in the May 2011 World War II Wyoming Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. A 28 year member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), he represented Wyoming SAR's WWII members at two Governor's Proclamation signings. He was awarded SAR medals for his support and service. He was a member of American Legion Post #6 in Cheyenne. Edward enjoyed gardening, camping, boating, skiing, golfing, biking and fly fishing. He loved travelling to visit family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Twyla Joy (Sidebottom) Thompson; son, David Thompson; daughters, Kathy Escobedo and Sheryl Shuster; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday, October 11th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home. A memory service will be held on Monday, October 12th at 10:00 a.m. at Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow in Beth El Cemetery.
