Eileen Ida Oldenburg

December 7, 1929 — June 12, 2023

Cheyenne

Eileen Ida Oldenburg was born on December 7, 1929, in Immanuel Hospital in Mankato, Minnesota to Elwin and Melinda Schubbe. She was the second of nine children.  Eileen married Robert Lee Oldenburg on October 14, 1950.  She and her husband raised two sons and one daughter, Steve, Dan, and Kim.  The things that meant the most in life to Eileen were her Lord and Church, family, sports, and work.

Eileen grew up on a farm and attended 1st through 8th grade in a one-room schoolhouse with one teacher on Perch Lake. She attended Mapleton High School for one year and for her last three years, attended and graduated from Pemberton High School. While in high school, she worked at Al’s Cash Grocery. She would work full-time in the summer from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays during the school year from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and made $25.00 per week. As a senior in high school, she worked during income tax time for an attorney in Mapleton. After graduation, she attended Mankato Commercial College. To help pay for college, she was a live-in for a family, helping with household chores and also worked part time at a drug store soda fountain.

At eighteen years old, Eileen finished her first set of books successfully at Commercial College, but because of financial difficulty, the president for the college sent her for an interview at Mankato Mills. She was hired for payroll, salesman commission and bonus, manufacturing feed, developing percentages of all types produced.

Eileen married Robert Oldenburg on October 14, 1950. She resigned from Mankato Mills to accompany her husband on his first assignment at F.E. Warren Air Force. F.E. Warren Air Force Base was training command at that time and included 10,000 students. It was almost impossible to find housing or a job. Eileen finally found a job at Schliechers Bakery. She worked 6 days a week and made $30.00 per week. They only had one vehicle and so Eileen would walk approximately 1 ½ miles to work each day.

Eileen took the Civil Service test and applied for the State of Wyoming. She was hired by Civil Service as a file clerk. She later got a job at the VA hospital in engineering. She resigned from her position so that she could start her family. She and her husband raised two boys and one daughter, Steve who was born in January of 1953, Dan who was born in May of 1954 and Kimberle who was born in August of 1957.
