Emily Brimmer

Emily Olene Docken Brimmer, 84, of Cheyenne died peacefully at her home in Cheyenne on March 28 of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Emily was born in Long Beach, Calif., on Sept. 11, 1927, and grew up in a farming community near Osage, Iowa. She was one of two children of Elvin and Olga Docken. After graduating from St. Olaf's college in Northfield, Minn., with a B.A. degree in English Literature, she became a school teacher. Her first teaching job was in Blooming Prairie, Minn. At the recommendation of a college friend, she applied for a teaching position in Rawlins and moved there in 1950. While working as a teacher in Rawlins, she met Clarence (Bud) Brimmer, Jr. The two were married on Aug. 2, 1953. The couple had four children: Geraldine, Philip, Andrew and Elizabeth. In 1972, the family moved to Cheyenne. Emily was active in numerous organizations including P.E.O. - Chapter AD, a service organization; the Blue Stockings, a women's literary society; and was a member of the Altar Guild for St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. Emily and Bud traveled the world, including six of the seven continents, with friends and family members. Of all the places they traveled, Emily most loved their summer cabin near Centennial. Emily is survived by her husband of 58 years, the Hon. Clarence A Brimmer Jr.; her children, Geraldine (Wayne) Thomas, Philip (Dana), Andrew (Tom) and Elizabeth (George); her two grandchildren, Drew and Clara Thomas; her brother, Galen Docken; her sisters in-law, Kathleen Docken and Norma Brimmer; her brothers in-law, William Brimmer and William Swanson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Cheyenne at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer's Association - Great Plains Chapter or Episcopal Relief & Development, the international relief and development agency of the Episcopal Church. .
