Emma Elizabeth Backer, 91, of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012 at The Lutheran Home. She was born November 3, 1920 in Grover, CO to Fred and Clara Schierenbeck Ehmke. Emma and Christian Ernest Backer were married February 28, 1943, in Cheyenne WY. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1984. Mrs. Backer was a homemaker and devoted mother. In Cheyenne, she worked for Schrader Funeral Home, and was a personal assistant for Mrs. Elizabeth Hoffmann. She moved to Cape Girardeau in 1990 and was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel in Cape Girardeau. Survivors include a daughter, Letha (George) Chambers, of Dublin, OH; a son, Leroy (Isabel) Backer of Atoka, TN; a son-in-law, Steven (Marilyn) Fritzler of Cape Girardeau; a brother, John Ehmke of Grover, CO; as well as seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chris; two brothers, Elmer Ehmke and Fred Ehmke; a daughter, Lois Fritzler; and two grandchildren, Adam and Clara Fritzler. Visitation will be Friday, August 31, from 2:30-4pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel in Cape Girardeau, with the funeral service immediately following. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Cheyenne, WY on Tuesday, September 4, with visitation at the cemetery beginning at 9am and graveside services and burial following at 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel or the Fritzler-Backer Endowment Fund at St. Paul's Lutheran High School, Concordia, MO.
