Evelyn Johnston

Evelyn Johnston, 106, passed away April 3, 2015, at Life Care Center of Cheyenne. She was born September 12, 1908 in Green Valley, Minnesota to Charles and Eliese Deck. The family moved to the Burns, WY area, then south of Egbert. She graduated from Egbert High School in 1925, then attended the University of Wyoming obtaining a teaching certificate, later getting her bachelor's degree. She began teaching in rural schools, then Torrington and Cheyenne, spending 31 years teaching-21 of those in Cheyenne schools. While in Torrington, Evelyn met Clarence Johnston and they were married. They had one son, Jim. Clarence died in 1956, and she remained a widow from then on. She was active in teacher's organizations and Mizpah Chapter No. 36 Order of Eastern Star; she was Worthy Matron in the early 60's. One of her great enjoyments was playing bridge for quite a few years with her friends. Most times, other activities etc. were done if they didn't interfere with bridge. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Leonard and Robert; sisters, Alice Johnson and Verda Wilson. She is survived by her son Jim Johnston of Laramie; grandchildren Scott (Cheryl) Johnston of Cheyenne, Bob (Bambi) Johnston of Buffalo, Lisa (Dave West) Johnston of Wheatland; great-grandchildren, Hayden Johnston, A'Le Johnston, Kylee Johnston, Kaylee Johnston, Mason Tubbs; nieces, Peggy (Lloyd) Moe of Libby, MT, Sharon (Don) Isler of Bozeman, MT, Justine Lovell of Lincoln, NE, Arrah Lee (Merritte) Wilson of Waitsburg, WA; and her good friend Marcia Wilcox of Cheyenne. Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, at Lakeview Chapel at Schrader Funeral Home, with the Reverend Diana Hartman of First Presbyterian Church presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Evelyn Johnston Memorial Fund for Palliative Care Education, c/o Wells Fargo Bank, 1701 Capitol Avenue, Cheyenne, WY 82001.
