Gary Schafer

Gary Lee Schafer, 64, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away to be with our Heavenly Farther on Friday, May 18, 2012, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cheyenne. Mr. Schafer was born in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Warren and Frieda (Holz) Schafer on February 23, 1948. He lived and grew up in Scottsbluff, NE, graduating from Scottsbluff High School in 1967. Shortly after graduating, he joined the Army and was stationed in New Ulm, Germany for two years, and later in Washington State where he was honorably discharged in July 1970, with the Rank of SP5. He moved to Alliance, NE, with his family in 1975 where he worked as a machinist for 21 years with the Burlington Northern Rail Road. A devout Lutheran, Gary was a Sunday School teacher and sang in the church choir at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Alliance, NE, and a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church in Cheyenne. While living in Alliance, he enjoyed teaching Red Cross life saving and swimming classes to children and adults. In 1988, Gary joined the Masonic Order in Alliance and served as Master of Lodge #183, A.F. & A.M. in 1991. In 1996, he moved to Cheyenne where he built his home with a lot of help for his wife Pam, his son Keith, and his friend Mike. From 2005 to 2012, he was a trolley tour guide and historian enthusiast of the City of Cheyenne. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Pamela J. (Petersen) Schafer of Cheyenne; his loving and caring sons, Chris E. Schafer and wife, Marietta Schafer, of North Carolina and Keith W. Schafer of Cheyenne; his mother, Frieda Schafer; his brother, Ken and wife, Megan; his grandchildren Joseph, Luke, and Samantha of North Carolina, and Jagger and Nealy of Craig, CO; and many wonderful nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Gary will be missed by many. A memorial service with military honors will be conducted on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert E. Schmidt officiating. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home.
