George Aydelott

George Robert Aydelott, 90, formerly of Rawlins, Wyoming, passed away January 1, 2014, at Life Care Center of Cheyenne. He was born August 18, 1923, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Vergal and Mayme (Clausson) Aydelott. When he was three years old, his family left Minnesota and settled in Encampment, Wyoming. George graduated from Encampment High School on 1942. In September of that year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was later being detached to the Eighth Air Force Medical Corps. His service career was spent in Central America, mostly Panama, but including Guatemala and Peru. He returned to ranching in Encampment in November, 1945. George married Mary Margaret Meyer in Laramie on November 4, 1946. He continued to live on the ranch in Encampment until October 1956, when he moved his family to Rawlins and began employment at the Carbon County Sheriff's office. In 1966, he began working at the Old Wyoming State Penitentiary and was there until 1978, but he continued working at the sheriff's office at the same time. He returned to the sheriff's office full time in 1978 and remained there until his retirement from law enforcement on July 1, 1984. He worked under John Terrill and C.W. Ogburn at the sheriff's office, and under Leonard Meacham and Duane Schillinger at the penitentiary. He also worked for a short while at the Daily Times, and he was an accomplished film projectionist and fingerprint interpreter. He and Mary traveled extensively following her retirement on January 5, 1987. In Encampment, he was a member of American Legion Post #34 in Saratoga, Farm Bureau, I.O.O.F, United Presbyterian Church, and VFW. In Rawlins, he was a Past Exalted Ruler and District Grand Exalted Ruler of B.P.O.E., Department Adjutant of the VFW, a member of A.F. & A.M. Lodge No. 5, WPOA, a former member of Scottish Rite and Shriners, and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He is preceded by his parents; his wife, Mary; a brother, Merl; and an infant brother, Vergal. He is survived by his son, Robert Aydelott and wife, Edith; daughter, Jean Holt and husband, Jim; a granddaughter, Larissa (aka "Lara Holt") Taylor and husband, Stuart; and a great-grandson, Finn Taylor. Private family services will be held at a later date. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home, Cheyenne.
