Gordon J. Haffeman, 85, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the VA Medical Center. Gordon was born October 20, 1928, in Mobridge, South Dakota, one of eight children born to the late George and Annie T. (Mleziva) Haffeman. The family moved to Hawkins, WI, where Gordon picked up his "Back on the Farm" experience. After the depression, the family returned to South Dakota where Gordon graduated from high school in 1946. He continued his education at the University Of South Dakota where he received his BS in Industrial Engineering. Gordon joined the United States Air Force in 1951. He became a pilot and flew transport aircraft. During his tour in Japan he was introduced to the C-130, the plane he loved and flew until his retirement. In 1958, Gordon was assigned as an ROTC Instructor at the University of Wyoming and fell in love with the area. He retired after 23 years in the Air Force and being an avid hunter and fisherman, he returned to Wyoming in 1972. In 1973, he began his second career as a brakeman for the UPRR where he acquired his, "First Out On The Extra Board" experience. Gordon is survived by his wife, Patricia, who he married in 1952; four children, Mark Haffeman, Anne Hamilton and husband, Randy, Luke Haffeman and wife, Jani, and April Wilson-Duggan and husband, Tim; four grandchildren; Christian Lukowski and wife, Amy, Tobias Martin, Scott Wilson, and Sunny Herder and husband, Miles; and three great-grandchildren. A memory service will be celebrated on Friday, March 28, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Schrader Chapel with Father Tim Martinson officiating. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home.
