Helen Zigmond

October 27, 1927 — November 26, 2019

On Tuesday, November 26, 2019, Helen Zigmond, loving mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 92.

Helen was born on October 27, 1927 in Vel’ky Bockov, Czechoslovakia. She and her family were abducted by the Nazis during the Holocaust and taken to the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. Liberated in 1945, she eventually met her future husband, Eugene in New York City. In 1954, Helen and Eugene moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where they raised their 3 children. They owned The Record Shop, which later became The Audio File, and Cheyenne Music & Vending Company.

Helen was preceded in death by her father, Israel, her mother, Leah, her sisters Aranka, Rose, and Miriam, her brothers Ben Zion and Zoltan, her son, Irving, and her husband, Eugene. She is survived by 2 sons, Barry and Joseph, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was active in the Jewish Community in Cheyenne for nearly 60 years. She, along with her brother, Zoli, were Wyoming’s only known holocaust survivors. She was a prominent fixture at various holocaust memorial ceremonies for many years, frequently pictured with dignitaries in local and regional newspapers. Her family, her business, and the synagogue were the great passions of her life.
