Herbert Miller

Herbert J. (Jim) Miller Jr., loving father, father-in-law and Opa, 86, died September 20, 2014, at the Cheyenne Veteran Affairs Hospice Unit. He was born January 16, 1928, to Herbert J. Sr. and Stella Miller in Brooklyn, New York. Herbert and his wife Eleanor met in 1947 when he was 19 and she was 24. They were married on July 13, 1951, in Munich, Germany. He went through basic training at Lowery AFB, Denver, CO., followed by an overseas assignment to Bad Kissingen and Neubiberg, Germany. He then went on to Maxwell AFB, AL., Orlando AFB, FL., Hahn AFB, Germany, Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY., and the final stop at F.E. Warren in Cheyenne in 1969. While at Warren, he was Base Sargent Major and later assumed the duty of Division Sargent Major, 4th Strategic Missile Division. After serving nearly 30 years, he retired in July 1974. After his retirement, he worked at the VA as a Benefits Counselor. He treasured his Schnauzer, Schatize, and the numerous hours he spent with his daughter-in-law, Deb. Special thanks to the nurses and CNA's at the Veteran Affairs Community Living Center and Hospice Unit. He loved to hunt, fish, play bridge and was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees. Herbert is survived by his son, Michael J (Deborah) Miller of Cheyenne; his daughter, Laura (Scott) Burley of Apple Valley, MN; a brother, Thomas F. Miller of San Rafael, CA; a grandson, Brian Perna of Hattiesburg, MS; a granddaughter, Keriann Perna of Eau Claire, WI; and step- grand-daughter, Sarah Meyer. Herbert was preceded in death by his caring wife, Eleanor, on May 12, 2012; an infant daughter, Patricia Mary; and his parents. Private family services will be held at a later date.
