Howard Hutchings, 83, of Cheyenne, died on October 5 at Davis Hospice Center. Born in Decatur, Illinois on November 15, 1930, to Troy and Stella Hutchings, he grew up on farms in West-Central Illinois and graduated from Winchester High School. He attended the University of Missouri in Columbia earned a Bachelor's degree in Food Technology and Master's Degree in Public Health. In Columbia Howard met Peggy Goodwin and they were married in 1958. Howard lived in Pierre, SD for 15 years where he was State Director of Environmental Health. Howard held leadership roles in his church, serving as a lay pastor for other churches, served two terms on the Pierre School Board, was a coach for softball teams, umpired baseball and softball, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Howard's contributions to the field of public health were recognized. He was past President of the International Association of Milk, Food, and Environmental Sanitarians. Howard was the Director of Environmental Health, and was the Consumer Product Safety Commissioner for Wyoming, residing in Cheyenne for 32 years. Howard volunteered at the Old West Museum, served on Cheyenne Historic Preservation Board, and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Howard loved learning, travelling, art, and music. His faith and family were the cornerstones of his life. Howard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy; son, Howard Jr. of Albuquerque; son, Troy of Flagstaff; granddaughters, Hannah Rae and Kendal Leigh; and his sister, Jean Klopfer (Ernie) of Illinois. He was preceded in death by parents (Troy and Stella), and sister (Mary Lou). A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Cheyenne on October 18, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Laramie County Senior Services, Old West Museum, or Davis Hospice Center.
