Irene Spier

April 27, 1925 — September 14, 2014

September 14th 2014, Irene G. (Laycock) Spier, passed away at the age of 89, after a long battle with Dementia. Born April 27th. 1925. The Daughter of James G. Laycock and Martha M. (Fruedenthal) Laycock. Irene's early life was spent on the Snow Ranch, where they raised sheep, rode horses, and did dishes, as Irene would say, "Lots of dishes". Her mother Martha cooked meals for all the field hands and just as the first dishes of the day were being dried, the men were coming back in for the next wonderful homemade meal and the next round of washing dishes would begin. Irene lived most of her life in Pine Bluffs. She graduated from Pine Bluffs High and met the love of her life Francis Spier. They were married February 28, 1953. Irene was a member of the Methodist Church of Pine Bluffs, the Women's Evening Circle, the Pine Bluffs Heritage Club, and the Women's Bowling Association. She always loved Pine Bluffs the best. Irene was an avid bowler along with her sisters Elizabeth Bradley and Mary Alice Judy, they were a force to be reckoned with. Not only did they look alike, they bowled alike. She never passed up a game of Pinochle and could still play the game even at the early onset of Dementia. Irene was a master crafter, especially at crocheting, making heirloom quality table clothes, baby blankets and more. She never passed up an opportunity to share her talents with anyone who was willing to learn. As a testament to the loving spirit of Irene, she soon took on a new protégé to teach some of her skills. Larry Moore entered her family and was another nephew with a tender spirit. His trips and excursions always brought a gift for the "Great Lady". Her favorite was chocolate covered orange slices. Irene's greatest enjoyment was spending time with her niece Roberta Judy, no matter what the occasion or project may have entailed. Roberta, a Child of God, left us too soon, but our memories of her live on. How wonderful it is that they are together again. Irene and Francie never had children of their own, but they opened up their hearts and home to their niece, Glenda Laycock. Glenda was ten years old when her mother died of cancer. Irene was Glenda's mom and Francie her dad. Glendas'children, Leanne and Kara, were their grandchildren. Their hearts are filled with wonderful memories of, holidays, camping, fishing, dancing and all the good times they shared. After Irene's sister Elizabeth Bradley passed on, Glenda (Laycock) Gray opened her heart and home to Irene. She then resided at the Platte County Memorial Nursing Home (PCMNH) in Wheatland, Wyoming. Irene loved music and she loved to dance. She was the "Belle of the Ball" at the monthly wheelchair dance at the PCMNH. She never missed a beat or forgot the words to a song. Even towards the end, you could catch a little toe tap now and then. Irene was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, husband, all of her brothers and sisters, (Glen Laycock, Elizabeth Bradley, Robert Laycock, Mary Alice Judy, and Thomas Laycock). Also, many nieces, nephews, step nieces, and step nephews. She is survived by; Thomas Judy, Raymond Laycock, Glenda Gray, Leanne Shepard, Kara O'Grady, Susan Jo Hunter, Moneen Birge, Jimmie Laycock, Rene Baker, Linda Talkington, Kenneth Spier, Larry Spier, Steven Spier, Gary Spier, and Dell Spier. As well as; Nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, great great great nieces and nephews, and all her wonderful friends. Dementia is an unforgiving disease. It may have taken all of Irene's memories, but it never took her undeniable love for everyone she came into contact with. Until her last few days, she would always say ‘I LOVE YOU'! (Thank you Glenda for your deep love and dedication to our wonderful Irene.) "Good night Irene, good night Irene, we'll see you in our dreams."
