James "Gunny" Asbury, 77, went home to be with the Lord on May 1, 2013, at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. He was born July 6, 1935, in East St. Louis, Illinois, and had lived in Cheyenne since 1975, although for the last 10 years had traveled extensively with his wife as snowbirds to warmer climates. James enlisted in the Navy at age 17 when he was too young to be a Marine, and after two years made his lifelong career in the United State Marine Corps -- "Once a Marine, always a Marine". He met his soul-mate, Linda Allen of Parma, MI, in San Diego, CA, and they were married on May 19, 1962, in Las Vegas, NV. They have four children. After 22 years service to our country, he fell in love with Wyoming on one of his many trips from one coast to the other, and he made it his choice place to retire. After retirement, he worked at the VA hospital, at LCCC as a welding instructor, a firefighter at F.E. Warren AFB, a self-employed chimneysweep, and finally as head of physical security at Safecard Services. For the past six years, he enjoyed being the Volunteer Camp Host for the Tumbleweed area at Curt Gowdy State Park. An active member of the community, Jim served on the Commissioning Committee for the USS Wyoming Submarine, and he worked many years with Boy Scout Troop 102. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Scottish Military Society, and the NRA. He was always an avid supporter of Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl sports. Gunny is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda; a daughter, Kelli Beinlich (Keith); 3 sons, James II, Kevin, and Troy (Lara), all of Cheyenne; and Chris Johnson (Nicky) of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, who considered him a father and grandfather to their family. In addition, he is survived by nine grandchildren, Nicole Kleve (Mitchell) of Lebanon, MO. Joshua and Aiden Asbury of Cheyenne, Jonah Asbury of Denver, Jessica Asbury of Laramie, Hillary Asbury of Ventura, CA, Aleksia, Heath and Gage Johnson of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; one great-granddaughter, LaeAnne Kleve; and a soon- to- be great-grandson, Nikolas James Kleve of Lebanon, MO. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia (Asbury) Yashur, and his sister, Joy Causey. Family arranged services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, in the Lodge Room (3rd floor) of the Elks Club, 100 E. 17th St. with Gunny's nephew, Reverend Brian Sayers of Windsor, VT, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Fischer House for military families. God Speed Gunny! Semper Fi, and fair winds and following seas. You will be missed.
