James Flinchum

November 5, 1916 — August 2, 2011

James Maxwell Flinchum, Jr. was born November 5, 1916, in Caddo, Oklahoma. He was a 1939 graduate of the University of Oklahoma journalism department and was editor of the Norman, Oklahoma, newspaper for two years. Following his graduation, Jim joined United Press as a reporter and worked there until January of 1942 when he entered the US Army and WWII. He served as an officer and platoon leader in the Philippines campaign until the war ended in 1945. He was awarded the bronze star. After the war he rejoined the UP wire service and was assigned to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he met and married Nancy Reynolds in 1948. The couple had two daughters, Nancy and Suzy, and they lived in Denver, Colorado, and Dallas and Houston, Texas, while working for United Press. In the fall of 1961, Jim and Nancy moved to Cheyenne where he became the Editor in Chief of The Wyoming State Tribune and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1985. He was famous for his intellect and tenacious pursuit of a news story. Jim was a long-time active member of the Cheyenne Rotary Club and the YMCA. Jim passed away peacefully August 2, 2011, in Cheyenne surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Nancy R. Flinchum of Cheyenne; two children Nancy Prosser, and husband, Ed, of Cheyenne, and Suzy Deger and husband, Tim, of Franktown, CO; grandchildren, Jackie Parker and husband, Todd, of Colbert, GA, and Brent Prosser and wife, Dana, of Grand Junction, CO; and five great-grandchildren, Dawson, Caitlin and Jocelyn Parker, and Evan and Luke Prosser. A graveside services will be held on Saturday August 6, 2011, at Lakeview Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. with The Reverend Trudy Robinson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
