J. Neil Long, 90, died Dec. 12 at Davis Hospice Center. Neil was born May 10, 1925, in Gilbert, Ark., to Thomas Jefferson Long and Nellie Maude Long, who preceded him in death. Neil came to Casper after serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps in occupied Japan following World War II and worked throughout Wyoming as an oil field trucking operator and contractor. He married Elinor M. Wilson on Jan. 16, 1951. Neil was president of the Wyoming Trucking Association from 1972-1973 before selling his trucking company in 1974. After retirement, he and his wife, Ellie, split their time between Casper and Mesa, Ariz., until they moved to Cheyenne in 2010 to be near their son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kit Long. Neil enjoyed golfing and was the Wyoming State Amateur "Senior Senior" champion at the age of 76 when he shot a final-round 76. He also enjoyed shooting pool and was a gold medalist in the Wyoming Senior Olympics. Neil was preceded in death by his seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Elinor M. Long of Cheyenne; sons, Thomas N. (Kit) Long of Cheyenne and James A. Long of Mesa, Ariz.; granddaughters, Alison M. (Dennis) Ward of Hydro, Okla., and Rebecca E. (John) Simmons of Dallas; great-grandson, Brennen Neil Ward of Hydro, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home. A reception will follow at the home of Tom and Kit Long, 224 Doubletree Lane, Cheyenne.
