Joe Clarence Gruber of Cheyenne, Wyoming died peacefully at the Davis Hospice Center on June 23, 2012. Joe was born on November 24, 1921, in Decatur, Illinois, and grew up largely in French Lick, Indiana. He was a graduate of Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, and Purdue University, with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He enjoyed a fruitful career in aerospace and mechanical engineering. Joe married Phyllis Maxine Gemmer on April 22, 1950, in Muncie, Indiana. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his children, Amy Gruber (Jim Johnson) of Cheyenne, and Mark (Yvonne) Gruber of Hastings, Minnesota; his sisters, Nancy Inman of Lafayette, Indiana, and Carol (Karl) Hertz of Thiensville, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren, Joseph Bergene, James Bergene, Andrew Bergene, Peter Bergene, Matthew Bergene, Michael Gruber, David Gruber, John Gruber, Annalise Gruber, and Christina Gruber; and many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Edgar Gruber and Maude Beatrice Hauger Gruber, and two very young sisters, Georgia and Jane. Joe was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Navy. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, the Korein Shrine, and the Masonic lodge. In addition to the profession of engineering, Joe loved good music, good books, good discussion, good cars, boating on Puget Sound, drawing humorous cartoons, and significant friendships of long duration. A memorial service with military honors will be conducted on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Diana Hartman officiating. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home.
