John G. Hanes, 77, a Cheyenne native, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday evening, July 21, 2013, at the Davis Hospice Center. Mr. Hanes was born May 27, 1936, in Cheyenne, a son of the late Harold "Hap" and Mary (Grier) Hanes. John was raised in Cheyenne and graduated from the University of Wyoming, School of Law. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in Washington, DC attaining the rank of Major for the Army JAG Corp. Following his honorable discharge, he met his wife, Liv Paul. They married in December, 1963. This December would have been their Golden Anniversary. He worked as Deputy Secretary of State under Thyra Thomson, served as a municipal judge and practiced law privately from 1966 to 1990. His passion to serve others led him to join the Cheyenne Rotary Club and he later served as the District Governor from 1990-91. He also served as a legislator in the Wyoming State House of Representative for six years and the Wyoming State Senate for eight years. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his love for family, especially his grandchildren. John is survived by his loving wife, Liv Hanes of Cheyenne; two sons, Greg Hanes and wife, Kyoko, of Broomfield, CO, and Clint Hanes and wife, Melissa, of Cheyenne; his sister, Suzanne Brown of Boulder, CO; and five grandchildren, Ayanna, Keelan, Hailey, Joe and Alexis. A memorial service will be conducted on Monday, July 29, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church with The Reverend Kevin Frank officiating. Expressions of sympathy in John's memory may be made to the Cheyenne Rotary Club Foundation Endowment.
