John Quirk

May 13, 1935 — January 29, 2013

John Haney "Jack" Quirk, MSgt, USMC Retired, 77, of Cheyenne, passed away on January 29, 2013. He was born May 13, 1935 in Carlisle, PA. and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduation from high school. He served proudly for 22 years, including a tour in Vietnam before retiring in June of 1976. Upon retiring, Jack and his family relocated to Cheyenne, where he was a graphic illustrator at F.E.Warren Air Force Base. He married Mary Elaine Rogers on August 10, 1957. As Jack would say, they enjoyed "52 years, 3 months, 2 days and 1 hour" of marriage before she preceded him in death on November 12, 2009. He is also preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Elizabeth Welcher and his father, John H. Quirk. He is survived by his step-father, Jim Welcher, his brother, Ray Quirk, his sister Mary Jane Patten, a brother, Bruce Quirk and sister, Sandy Quirk Visco. Additionally, he is survived by his four children, Mary Kay (Nick) Lumbreraz, James (Gail) Quirk, Bobbi (Carl) Johnson, and Beth (Jeff) Allen, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Jack's interests included his artwork, exploring the country in his motor home, and political activism locally as a founder of the group C.O.$.T. and a frequent writer of letters to the editor public forums. There will be a private family funeral. Friends are asked to join the family for a celebration of life at the Bunkhouse Bar Saturday, February 2, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. where we will tip a glass in Jack's honor and share our favorite stories. In lieu of flowers, Jack would be honored to have a donation made in his memory to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.
