John "Jack" Henry Stouffer, 84, of Cheyenne died March 2, 2013 in Cheyenne. He was born August 27, 1928 in Hagerstown, MD to Robert F. and Margaret V. Stouffer. In September 1944, at the age of 16, he enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines and attended boot camp at Sheepshead Bay, NY. Following boot camp, he served as a wiper in the fire fighter rooms aboard the S.S. Gulf Wax, S.S. Ponca City, S.S. Ephraim Brevard, in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Middle East and Pacific war zones, all during WWII. In July 1945, he separated from the Merchant Marines and in November 1945 enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving as a boiler maker aboard the U.S.S. Ajax, AR-6 in the Pacific Fleet and in 1946 he participated in the Atomic Bomb Tests, at Bikini Atoll Operation Cross Road. He married Melvia Wood on August 27, 1971 in Cheyenne. He is a member of the American Legion Post #6 and the VFW #4343. He is survived by his wife, Melvia Stouffer of Cheyenne; children, John Stouffer of Cheyenne, Alan Stouffer of Loveland, CO, JoAnn Prado of Summerset, TX, Sue Mordhorst of Cheyenne and Greg Thompson of Cheyenne; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister Sandra Holland of Elkton, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bob Stouffer, Sonny Stouffer and Ann Koontz. Those who wish may contribute to the American Cancer Society. Memorial Services will be Friday 4:00 p.m. in the Schrader Chapel followed by a reception in the Schrader Reception Center. Cremation has taken place under the care of Schrader Funeral Home.
