Floyd J. Lopez, of Cheyenne, passed away March 6 at Davis Hospice Center.
He was born May 9, 1939 in Chama CO., and raised by his mother Crestina Lopez.
He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Mary Torrez, on May 9, 1957 in Greeley CO. They raised a family of five and later moved to Cheyenne in 1969. He was a devoted husband, Father, Papa, brother, uncle, and friend.
He was a larger than life member of the community. His long running career was in sales, becoming a popular, trustworthy auto salesman. Half of Cheyenne probably owns a car he sold them. His love of Cheyenne led him into the role of a City Councilman.
As a Councilman, he was instrumental in the development of the Depot Plaza, Cheyenne’s Transit System, the downtown parking garage, and the Lions Park Community House. After retirement, he drove for the transit system and volunteered for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Cheyenne Civic Center. He was a member of the Latin American Club and the Moose Lodge.
Floyd was a Denver Bronco fan through and through. GO BRONCOS! He enjoyed the outdoors by fishing, camping, and keeping beautiful flowerbeds and at one point, a garden. He dabbled in photography, taking pictures of nature and fun events. He read daily, had a zeal for crossword puzzles and an appreciation for classic cars. He became a talented artisan in woodworking, and finally ventured into his love of cooking, resulting in new pots and pans for Mary. It was a win win.
He is survived by his children June (Paul) Wood, Floyd Mario (Debbie) Lopez, Lisa Howell, Debbie (Todd) Jones, a sister Ida Aragon, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, son Rudy M. Lopez, and sisters Rosemary Roybal and Dolly Garcia.
A vigil and rosary for Floyd will be at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday March 13 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1808 Hot Springs Ave., in Cheyenne WY. Funeral liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday March 14 at holy Trinity Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Olivet Cemetery, followed by a reception.
