Joseph Meyer

April 22, 1941 — October 6, 2012

Joseph "Joe" Meyer, 71, of Cheyenne died October 6, 2012 at Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne. Born April 22, 1941 to Mel and LeOna Meyer in Casper where he grew up and graduated from Natrona County High School. He attended the University of Wyoming and earned his undergraduate degree in math and chemistry and Juris Doctorate from the College of Law. While in college he met his future wife, Mary Orr, a Sheridan native. They were married on September 3, 1966 in Sheridan. Meyer's career included serving as the Deputy Fremont County Attorney before going into private practice. He moved his family from Lander to Cheyenne to serve as the first Assistant Director of the Legislative Service Office (1971-85); was appointed Wyoming Attorney General (1986-95); become a special assistant to the UW President for governmental relations and communications (1995-97) before entering the political arena. He was elected Wyoming Secretary of State for two terms (1999-2007) and was in the second term as Wyoming State Treasurer (2007-2012) at the time of his death. Of all his accomplishments he was most proud of the education he received at the University of Wyoming, his family's first generation college graduate. His greatest joy was always his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Cheyenne; sons, Vince and Warren (Cory) and grandsons Ethan and Devin Meyer, all of Cheyenne. When he wasn't striving to make Wyoming a better place to live, he was enjoying Wyoming by way of his hobbies including, fishing camping and rock hunting with his sons and eventually his grandsons; home gardening, golf, playing bridge and reading. He and Mary enjoyed traveling with family and friends to places all around the world. It was fun to watch him looking for interesting plants and rocks that weren't native to Wyoming, during those trips. Meyer was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Laramie County Library Foundation or to the Joe and Mary Meyer Endowment to Support Student Internships in Public Service, in care of the UW Foundation at 1200 E. Ivinson, Laramie WY 82072. Due to UW Homecoming activities this weekend, the services will be held next week to include a Wyoming State Capitol Rotunda Service October 18th at 10:30 followed by lying-in-state until 6:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be October 19th at 1:30 p.m. at Cheyenne Hills Church, 7505 U.S. Highway 30, followed by a reception for all of his friends who are encouraged to wear brown and gold. Cremation will take place after his lying-in-state and prior to his memorial service all under the care of Schrader Funeral Home.
