Katherine Gordon

December 28, 1921 — October 23, 2011

Mrs. Katherine F. Gordon, 89, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away early Sunday morning, October 23, 2011, at her home. Mrs. Gordon was born December 28, 1921, in Portland, Maine, a daughter of the late John J. and Catherine (Doyle) Fox. Katherine enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II as a registered nurse and met her future husband, Robert Gordon, while caring for him as a patient at Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She was honorably discharged with the rank of Ensign and married Robert on February 8, 1947. She raised their two daughters and cared for their home while her husband served as a U.S. Naval officer. After her daughters were grown, she chose to continue her education and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Arizona in Tucson, followed by a Master's Degree in Library Science, also from the U of A. She worked as a librarian at Nogales Junior High in Nogales, Arizona, for fifteen years until her retirement. Her interests included reading and being an avid supporter of the public library system. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, particularly returning to the east coast to visit family. Katherine is survived by her two daughters, Judith Schuler of Tucson, AZ, and Martha "Gordy" Vondrak of Cheyenne; three grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 59 years, Robert Gordon; a brother, Thomas Fox; and a sister, Margaret Garvin. Her family will be holding a Funeral Mass in Cheyenne at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Friday, October 28, 2011, at 11am. Interment will be held in Portland, Maine, at a later date. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home.
