Laurel Smith

February 14, 1917 — October 27, 2011

Laurel Marvin Smith, 94, of Cheyenne, formerly of Wheatland passed away October 27, 2011 at Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne. He was born February 14, 1917 in Torrington, the son of Minnie Alice (Balmer) and Edward Smith. His growing up years were at various ranches and his parents homesteaded a place. He graduated from Chugwater High School and attended several semesters at the University of Wyoming, after which he taught school. He married Genevieve Perry in 1939 in Laramie. He had 2 children, Verne and Kathy. He worked in the Wheatland Post Office for 30 years. During World War II, he served his country and was wounded in a foxhole in Germany. He enjoyed fishing, music, gardening, playing cards and family get-togethers. Many will remember him by his ability to raise beautiful, delicious tomatoes!! He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Smith; children, Verne (Ann) Smith and Kathy (Kenneth) Grandia; grandchildren, Jay Bromaghin, Scott Smith, Krystal Berg and Kimberley Buller, to whom he was "Poppy"; 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie and Ed; brother, Merle Smith; sisters, Frances Windom and Jayne (Roff) Smith. A celebration of his life will be held at the Services for Seniors Annex, 809 16th St, Wheatland, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a scholarship fund for a 2012 graduate of Chugwater High School, to attend the University of Wyoming. Donations may be made thru Wells Fargo Bank (Ginger or Leigh Ann), 874 Gilchrest St., Wheatland, WY 82201. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home in Cheyenne and online condolences may be made at www.schraderfuneral.com.
