Lester Weinstein, 89, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2014, at the Veterans Administrations Hospice Center in Cheyenne. He was born to Russian immigrants, Simon and Rose Weinstein, in Mattapan, Massachusetts, on December 21, 1924. Lester attended Boston Latin until he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17. He trained as a medic and he participated in D-Day off the coast of Normandy. Returning to the states, he was attached to the Sixth Marines and sent to the South Pacific where he was wounded in action on Okinawa. Lester first discovered the West while he convalesced at the Hotel Colorado at Glenwood Springs. He would live out the "American Dream", first going to Colorado Teachers College on the GI Bill in Greeley, where he met Agnes Plumb, his beloved wife of almost 65 years. Earning a Master's Degree, he would teach math in Douglas and later in Cheyenne where he taught over two thousand Carey Junior High math students during his thirty year career. In his spare time, he started a program for gifted and talented math students. He also volunteered for veteran's organizations, the Boy Scouts, and was very active at Mount Sinai Synagogue. Lester loved the outdoors, especially fishing around the great State of Wyoming. Lester Weinstein is survived by his wife, Agnes; sons, Steven and wife, Esther, and Jeff and wife, Mary; and grandchildren, Nathan and Ali. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leo; his sister, Sylvia; and daughter, Libby. A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Mount Sinai Synagogue with Rabbi Larry Moldo officiating. An interment service will follow at the Cheyenne Jewish Cemetery. Contributions can be made to Mount Sinai Congregation.
