Lt. Col. Edwin Friehauf

Lt. Col. Edwin "Fritz" Friehauf died, March 9, 2015, he was 77 years of age. He was born March 6, 1938, in Brush, Colorado, a son of the late Edwin J. and Lydia (Reichert) Friehauf. Fritz grew up on a farm north of Brush and graduated from Brush High School in 1956. In 1960, he received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant through the AFROTC program. He entered the Air Force in February 1961 with an assignment to the 1381st Geodetic Survey Squadron in Orlando, Florida, as Chief, Missile Site Survey Team. At this time, our nation was beginning the deployment of the Minuteman ICBM system. After assignments in Montana, Nebraska, Alabama, Wyoming and Washington, D.C., he returned in 1982 to F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming, to command the Geodetic Survey Group until his U.S. Air Force retirement in August 1986 with 26 years of service. In 1987, Fritz started his own business, A Frame by Fritz, a custom framing and art shop, which he owned and operated for 21 years until his retirement in 2008. Fritz is survived by his wife, Fran; two sons, Shayne (Patricia) Friehauf of Ft. Collins, CO, and Brent (Doreen) Friehauf of Lincoln, NE; four grandchildren, Gavin Friehauf of Lincoln, NE, Jacob Friehauf of Ft. Collins, CO, Heather DeVries of Lincoln, NE, and Crystal DeVries of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren, Kailyn and Colin Barbour of Lincoln, NE; brothers, Bob Friehauf of Ft. Collins, CO, and Ron Friehauf of Brush, CO; sister, Patricia Drzewiecki of Jackson, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Stan Friehauf. One of Fritz's passions was baseball. He played at Colorado A&M which led to tryouts with the Denver Bears and Milwaukee Braves. He continued to play during his early years in the Air Force. Later in life, he enjoyed coaching and watching his sons and grandsons play baseball. Additionally, Fritz enjoyed country and steel guitar music, art photography, golf, fishing, yard work, his Westie dogs, and his church activities with the First Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Elizabeth Wilson officiating. An interment service with military honors will follow at the Cheyenne City Columbarium. Cremation is under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Davis Hospice Center, 6000 Sycamore, Cheyenne, WY 82009, or to the Fritz Friehauf Memorial Fund to benefit the Cheyenne Post 6 Baseball Program, c/o Frances Friehauf, 6230 Kemp Hill Drive, Cheyenne, Wyoming 82009. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Schrader Funeral Home, Cheyenne.
