Lucy Barone

December 12, 1918 — July 14, 2012

Lucy Marie Barone, 93, beloved mother, grandmother and aunt peacefully passed away July 14, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 12, 1918 in Salida, Colorado, to Anne and Angelo Spino. Lucy, the eldest of five children, attended school in Salida and was involved with the family-owned Salida Grocery Store. In 1935, she married Patrick Barone. They became the proud parents of three children: Rose Marie, Larry and Gloria Ann. In 1947, they moved to Cheyenne, where she has resided ever since. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral since 1947 and was a strong supporter of Catholic education. In later years, she spent much time in prayer, remembering friends and relatives in her daily prayers. Lucy loved children very much and worked as librarian and aide at Deming School for over 13 years. She was also the bookkeeper, manager and costume designer for the Barone Baton Twirling and Dance Studio for over 30 years, where her daughters were the instructors teaching students from Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska. Lucy was a noted costume and pageant gown designer. One of her costume creations, modeled by her daughter Gloria Ann, won the "Most Beautiful Costume" award over all designers at the 50 state national contest held on the Notre Dame campus during the "America's Youth On Parade". She also designed the costume her granddaughter Leisann wore during the "Parade of States" at the Miss USA Pageant, which is now displayed at the Wyoming State Museum along with the large cowboy hat designed by her son, Larry. Lucy, along with her son Larry, was an owner and bookkeeper for the Barone Properties until 2005. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family at their weekend dinners and outdoor gatherings often offering her artistic talents for their craft projects and participating in mind games such as Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She enjoyed TV game shows and watching the Wyoming Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, and Colorado Rockies. She was an excellent speller and participated in the senior spelling bee. She loved to travel with her family in her motor home across most of the United States. Lucy enjoyed several cruises and Hawaii. One of her most memorable trips was touring Italy with her son and father. She saw Pope John Paul II in Arizona in a trip arranged by his Excellency, Bishop Hart, and was interviewed by KGWN-TV upon her return.
