Mary Hazzard

December 15, 1950 — May 2, 2014

Mary Hazzard, 63, joined the angels on May 2, 2014, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, her hometown of 20 years. Mary was born December 15, 1950. She and George Hazzard met at a DC airport during a contest to find a missing radio DJ; instead, they found the love of their lives. They married April 10, 1971, in Herndon, Virginia, beginning 43 years of beautiful adventures together, taking them from the wide skies of Montana, to the tranquil beaches of Hawaii, and finally to her adopted home of Cheyenne, where she worked at the Wyoming Department of Health, with many dear friends. Her four remarkable children are the pride of her life, and in addition to home-schooling them, she shared with them her love of cooking, sewing, and music. She loved camping and she treasured the time spent with her family and beloved friends. The daughter of a gentleman farmer, she loved both beauty and practicality, and nurtured tomatoes, string- beans, and a festival of flowers in her wind-swept gardens around the back deck. She always loved bible study, and led a study group in her home for the last several years, bringing her peace, and many cherished friendships. Her hand-bells made a joyful noise, and her angelic soprano voice lifted praise to heaven in her church choir. She is survived by her loving husband, George, her siblings Florence Smith, Phyllis Welch (Fred), Charles Fortney (Becky), and William Fortney (Kim), her children Michelle (Taylor Daynes), Aimee (Josh Lindvall), Ginger Montes (Evan), and Ben (Lidia Cabrera), and her radiant granddaughter, Mindi Montes. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 7th, at Frontier United Methodist Church. Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and sibling, and we will treasure our memories of her until we are with her again.
