Melinda "Mel" Powell

July 21, 1954 — April 9, 2020

Melinda “Mel” Katherine Chauncey Powell, 65, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, fought a courageous battle with cancer for several years.

As the strong woman, she never complained and continued to live her life throughout. She passed away on April 9, 2020 at Davis Hospice Center with close friends, Mary Gardner and Jennifer Culp, at her side.

Mel was born on July 21, 1954 in San Diego, California to Vivian and Percival Powell.  She is survived by a brother, Jim Powell, of Oregon; her lifelong friend, Franya Sidoroff and her goddaughter, Sarita Villanueva, both of California; and her close friends, Scott and Jennifer Culp and Mary Gardner.  Mel will be sadly missed by anyone who truly knew her and all will hope to cross paths with her in the future.

Mel grew up surfing, sailing and enjoying the sunshine that is southern California. She gave a home and love to many animals over her life, primarily her beloved Labradors. She recounted many stories of these times in her life with joy.

After Mel relocated to Cheyenne, she worked as a unit secretary at CRMC on the oncology floor and later at behavioral health. She went on to work for Peak Wellness providing safety and security for residents at the CASA Crisis House. Most recently, Mel worked as a scheduler at the medical clinic on FE Warren Air Force Base. Anyone who worked with her will recall her attention to detail and pride in a task well done. She showed compassion and caring to all.

Mel was a kind, generous and gentle soul. Her love of dogs brought her the nickname of "dog whisperer" as she could bring calm and peace to the most broken and fearful of animals just by her presence. In light of this, we ask that if you'd like, please make a donation to SafeHarborLabRescue.org in Mel’s memory.

Cremation is under the care of Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home.

Services are entrusted to Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home, 2222 Russell Avenue, Cheyenne, Wyoming 82001.
