Richard "Dick" Hartman

November 5, 1948 — July 30, 2015

Four years ago, Richard "Dick" Myron Hartman began his personal battle against an uninvited guest, Carcinoid Cancer (neuroendocrine). Dick faced his battle with COURAGE, FAITH, PAIN, HUMILITY and HOPE along with the support of family, friends and the expertise of physicians offering treatment options. He lost his battle to this disease in his home, family at his side, on Thursday, July 30, 2015. Dick was born November 5th, 1948, in Edmond, Oklahoma, to the late Thomas M. and Grace Jeanette Hartman. He grew up in Luther, Oklahoma, where his home and family, sports and hunting were all a source of pride to Dick as he would often reminisce about his boyhood adventures. Dick graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma, with a double-major Bachelor of Arts Degree in American Government and American History. He earned a Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from Colorado State University. After graduation, he joined the staff of Governor Ed Herschler as the State Planning Coordinator, a position which he held from 1978 to 1985, when he joined the Union Pacific as Special Representative to the President and then Director of Public Affairs for Wyoming and Colorado. He retired in 2013. He was named an Outstanding Young Man of America and Central State University's Distinguished Former Student. He served on many boards, including Old West Regional Commission, Wyoming Centennial Commission, Montana Economic Revitalization, and the Development Institute Board. Dick was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and attended regularly. He was devoted to reading and studying his Bible and sharing his faith with his family and friends. Dick loved being outdoors and excelled in hunting, fishing and golf. He was an active member of the One Shot Antelope Hunt in Lander, WY and the Grand National Quail Hunt in Enid, OK where he had served as President of the Past Shooters Association and participated in team and individual competitions at both hunts. He was an active member of the Colorado Two Shot Goose Hunt Past Shooters Club, Colorado Invitational Dove Hunt Past Shooter, Nebraska One Shot Pheasant Hunt, Water for Wildlife Foundation, and the Grand National Waterfowl Hunt. He was inducted into the International Order of St. Hubertus, an international fraternity of sportsmen. Following his diagnosis of carcinoid cancer, Dick, Leann and their precious grandchildren became active participates in the "Run for Hope 5k" in Ft. Collins, CO. Dick's family was known as "Sir Richard's Runners", a name that he proudly attached to his battle armor. Dick's battle with carcinoid cancer was lost but the war to fight this insidious disease has just begun as Dick would be the first to join the sentiment of the "Run for Hope 5K", ONE DAY CANCER WILL BE NO MORE!
