Robert Grant

Robert Mills Grant, lifelong resident of Wheatland, passed away after a brief illness on March 1, 2012 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. On December 30, 1926 Bob was born in Cheyenne, WY. When he was old enough he would ride his horse, Snowball to school on the CMD ranch on Richeau Creek. Soon they built a school at the Grant Ranch. He later attended and graduated from high school in Wheatland. Bob ran a cow/calf operation with his mother and father on the then 3rd generation ranch. He was very proud to own and operate the family Ranch which was established in 1884, making it one the oldest, continuous operations in the state. In his younger days, Bob competed in calf roping and steer roping, he was a PRCA gold card member. For 16 years, Bob was on the Platte County Fair Board and greatly enjoyed his time managing the county fair. In fact, Bob successfully held a PRCA sanctioned rodeo in conjunction with the fair for about 15 years. In 1976 Bob ran for a seat in the State House of Representatives. That year he didn't win, but in 1982 he ran again and won. He served 5 terms in the House and bowed out in 1992 when Platte County was reduced to one seat. Around 1979, Bob and seven others invested shares in the First State Bank in Wheatland. Bob was a Wyoming Stock Growers' member for about 60 years, a lifelong member of the Moose Lodge #1636 in Wheatland. He was also Chairman of the Brand and Theft Committee and stated "brand law in Wyoming is the best in the West." Bob's children all grew up on the ranch. Bob was an avid golfer and traveled to many rodeos and steer roping events. Bob was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Margaret Grant; parents, Cora & Duncan Grant. Betty Wiggam Grant and her son, Robert Wiggam. Sue Anna McLean Conrad Grant; grandson, Quent Juschka; sisters, Verda (Robert) Dey and Helen Wilson. Bob is survived by a daughter, Susan Grant Juschka of Glendo, WY, and her son, Grant (Sarah) Juschka of Steamboat, CO, Mike (Becky) Grant and their daughters, Samantha, Allie & Rayne all of Wheatland, WY, Matt (Susie) Grant and their sons, Garrett, Ben and Alex all of Casper, WY; step children that he called his own, David Conrad of Las Vegas, NV, Tommie Anne Benigni & her daughters, Ashley, Lauren & Brooke all of Ft. Collins, CO, Mary Conrad McPhillips and her children Hayley & Riley all of Sheridan, WY and 5 great-grandchildren. And Bob's beloved companion, Carol Barnett of Cheyenne. He was a friend and family of the heart to so many. Honorary Pallbearers are all of his steer roping, gin playing, golfing or scotch drinking buddies. Carol and the family especially appreciated the compassionate care and support that he received from so many of the medical community during his illness. A celebration of his life will be held at the Wheatland 4-H Building on Friday, March 9, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a person honors Bob's memory by doing something kind or generous for someone else.
