Robert J. Larson, 98, a longtime resident of Cheyenne passed away peacefully in his sleep at his memory care facility in Denver, CO on the morning of October 14, 2023. Robert, (Bob) was preceded in death by his beloved wife Shirley in 2021.
Bob was born to Homer and Mildred Larson in Hastings, NE. He served in the 15th Army Corps as a tail gunner in WWII. He completed 24 missions that flew out of Italy. After being discharged, he signed up for the Reserves. He was recalled to service from 1951-1955 as an officer in the Ordinance Corps. Serving in Aberdeen, MD and Kaiserslautern, Germany.
He married Shirley Trontell on February 14, 1953, who was teaching in the American Dependent Schools in Kaiserslautern. After discharge Bob pursued his degrees including a BS from Nebraska and an MS from Wyoming Universities.
Bob and Shirley settled in Cheyenne, where Bob taught science at Johnson Jr High and eventually Central High, where he taught biology. In 1971 he became involved in environmental activities for the school district, including a project that evolved into ECO Lab, and finally as district Science Coordinator until his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of professional organization CTA, WEA, NEA and RTA as well as Delta Kappa professional society where he served as president for one year. His civic involvements included 10 years if service as the Laramie County Recreation Board and Laramie County Conservation District as a board member.
Bob and Shirley enjoyed their homes in Cheyenne, cabin in Mountain Home WY, and farm in Grover CO, before settling in at Pointe Frontier for their sunset years.
After Shirley’s death Bob spent his last years at Springbrooke Retirement in Denver to be near his sister in law, Joan Carroll and nephew, John Carroll.
Bob and Shirley have been parishioners of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Cheyenne since 1957. His funeral mass will be celebrated there on October 30th, 2023 beginning at 1:00 pm, preceded by a Meet and Greet with the family at 12:30 pm.
