Robert "Bob" Means, 61, of Cheyenne, died suddenly at his home on May 26. Bob was born October 1, 1953, in Great Falls, Montana, to Robert and Beulah Means. He spent part of his childhood in Newfoundland, Canada. He graduated high school in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Arizona. Bob worked many jobs with public land management agencies throughout the western U.S. and Alaska, as a wildland firefighter, aviation officer and forester. He met the love of his life, Maria Durazo, when they both worked for the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona. Bob served in the Peace Corps in Niger, Africa, and spent time in Saudi Arabia and Mexico working on his dissertation about nomads. After various other exploits, he moved to Cheyenne in 2001 to work for the Bureau of Land Management where he managed the Forestry program. Bob was Chair of the Society of American Foresters and a member of the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation. He mentored university students and interns. He was active in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Cheyenne and served on its Finance Committee. Bob's attention to natural resources was as enormous as was his compassion for people from all walks of life. His hobbies overlapped with his work, sanding wood rounds and counting tree rings on his weekends. However, the thing he enjoyed most was spending time with his children, whether it was fishing and hiking, helping with homework, or building a computer from scratch. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Lorelai. He is survived by his wife, Maria, daughter, Marcela, son, Taylor, and brother, Rick. A celebration of Bob's life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7th, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Cheyenne.
