Roberta Briggs

May 9, 1929 — May 1, 2013

Roberta Lou Briggs, 83, passed away on May 1, 2013. She was born in Osawatomie, Kansas on May 9, 1929. Roberta was the first born child of Hershel and Clara Day. She was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and a love of music that endured throughout her life. Her family moved to Cheyenne in 1942. During WWII she volunteered at the VA Hospital and sang at the USO. After graduating from Cheyenne High in 1947, she and Robert "Art" Briggs were married on August 8, 1947. The two embarked on their life's journey together. Roberta had a fast smile that could bring relief and assurance to the most impossible circumstance. Her voice could calm the harshest storm in your life. She had a no nonsense scowl that would freeze you in your tracks leaving you ashamed in your offense. She was the rock to her family. She was a fiercely loyal friend. She imbued in her children tolerance, acceptance and a love of the arts. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she worshiped and volunteered for most of her life. She offered her clarion voice as a member of the choir and as a soloist. She sang in Mother Singers, Sweet Adeline's , Mountain Mama and Dream Makers Quartets. She sang for countless weddings and funerals. For Roberta, life was there for the taking. She never made excuses: a doer, a maker, a believer, a mother and a Woman. She is survived by her husband, Robert "Art" Briggs of Cheyenne, son John R. Briggs (Judy Townsend) of Merritt Island, FL, daughters Cheryl L. DenOuden (Don) of Avon SD, Janet L. Vossler (David) of Cheyenne, one sister Vicky Cloyd (Bill) of LaPorte, TX and one brother Tom Day of Henderson, NV, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents Hershel Charles Day and Clara Bell Day and sister Charlotte Grandlund. Visitation is scheduled on Sunday, May 5 from 1 pm to 6 pm at the Schrader's Funeral Home. The funeral will be on Monday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church.
