Roslyne “Roz” Kaufman, a well-known, active, and caring member of the Cheyenne community, passed away on Monday morning, August 16, 2021 in Cheyenne.
Roz was the eldest child of Dave and Minnie Wolf of Denver and Cheyenne, and the wife of George Kaufman, also an icon in the Cheyenne community and owner of Peoples Sporting Goods for many decades.
Roz’s life is simply defined by her devotion to family and her service to the community. She raised three daughters, one of whom was born with a severe birth defect and who only lived to be 16 years old. That child was kept at home rather than being institutionalized for her entire life, and she was made as comfortable, safe, and healthy as was possible. Roz’s devotion to family extended to her distant as well as local family members, siblings, and grandchildren, all of whom were recipients of care, kindness and concern throughout the years.
The Cheyenne community benefitted from Roz’s talents as she worked tirelessly for multiple causes and organizations. She was a founding member of the Stride Learning Center and was instrumental in finding a location for their activities as well as furnishings for their building. She was a charter member of the Cheyenne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was president, publicity chair, board member or fundraising chair for dozens of charitable organizations in the city, including chairwoman of a city-wide Girl Scout Cookie Drive. In 1985 she was named Wyoming Mother of the Year, an honor of which she was particularly proud.
Roz is survived by daughters, Helen Sumner (Tim Thatcher) of Cheyenne and Susie Perlman (Sam Cheris) of Denver; grandchildren, Stacie Perlman (Aaron Moskowitz) of New Hampshire and Giordin Perlman (Steven Rockwell) of Florida; and four great-grandchildren, Sean Thatcher, Martin Moskowitz, Madilyn Rosalie Rockwell and Caleb Rockwell. She is predeceased by daughter, Elaine Joy Kaufman; husband, George S. Kaufman; and son-in-law, Martin Perlman.
Roz will be sorely missed by her family as well as the greater community for her wit, her drive, and her sincere concern for those around her, not to mention her banana bread and frosted brownies.
A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cheyenne Jewish Cemetery.
