Roy Freeman Johnson

April 14, 1959 — January 24, 2025

Cheyenne

Roy Freeman Johnson, 65, of Ft. Collins, Colorado, formally of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, at Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne, WY.

Roy was born April 14, 1959, in Rexburg, Idaho to Rees A. Johnson and Norma A. (Freeman) Johnson. He was raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He attended Davis Elementary School, McCormick Junior High School and graduated from Central High School in 1978. He played football for Central and was always proud of being a part of the State Championship team in 1977.

Growing up Roy was active in the Boy Scouts of America. After years of Scouting with his dad and brothers he earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award, which he was always very proud of.

After high school he attended Ricks College (BYU-I) and studied welding. In May of 1979 he was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served for two years in the Louisville, Kentucky mission. He loved being a missionary, teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and serving others.

Roy worked for 30 years as a custodian for Poudre School District in Ft. Collins, Colorado. He worked in several elementary schools, Jr. high and high schools. When Roy worked in the elementary schools, he thoroughly enjoyed the students and knew each one by name. He enjoyed helping the teachers and keeping the schools in the best condition. In recognition of his hard work and devotion, Roy was nominated for the Don Morford Custodial Employee of the Year Award in 2003 and was honored to receive the award in 2006.

Roy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and attended the Overland Trail Ward in Ft. Collins, CO. Roy served in various callings throughout his lifetime. He taught Primary for years and once again enjoyed his association with the kids and teaching them the gospel. He was currently serving in the Sunday School Presidency at the time of his passing.

In his leisure time, Roy enjoyed spending time outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting with his buddies and even feeding the squirrels at the park. He also enjoyed traveling to Washington State and vacationing with his brother Rex.

Roy had a very kind, giving nature about him. Roy was known for his infectious sense of humor and his famous one-liners that often-brought laughter to those around him. He was a favorite patient at Centre Avenue Rehabilitation, Poudre Valley Hospital and Davis Hospice. Even with all of his health issues and limitations in the last few months of his life, he was always kind and grateful to those who were caring for him. He was even given the nickname of “The Legend” at hospice, a nickname he certainly lived up to in the last days of his life.

Roy is survived by his siblings Jef A. Johnson (Vickie) of Draper, UT, Rex D. Johnson of Puyallup, WA, Kirk R. Johnson (Stacey) of Spanish Fork, UT and Norma Ann “Nibs” Butterfield (Mike) of Cheyenne, WY. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his father Rees A. Johnson, mother Norma A. (Freeman) Johnson, paternal and maternal grandparents, and his beloved dog and companion Buddy. We are sure there was a joyous reunion as Roy went through the veil into heaven. Rest in peace Roy, you will be greatly missed and forever loved.
