LTC Roy Clinton Wasson, US Army, retired, died August 3, 2011 at Davis Hospice Center, Cheyenne. He was born October 21, 1918 in Ottawa Kansas to James O. and Alice B. Wasson. He married Mary Elizabeth Pence on July 5, 1941 in Olympia, Washington; she preceded him in death. He later married Shirley R. Pfeifer on June 2, 2006 in Cheyenne. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after serving in 19 major campaigns in the United States Army as an Artillery Officer, Communications Officer, and Intelligence Officer in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Among the citations and awards that he held most dear are the Bronze Star for Valor and the Liberation of Verdun Medal. In 1959 he received his initial assignment as Professor of Military Science at Cheyenne Central High School. After overseas duty, he returned to Cheyenne as National Guard Advisor until his retirement in 1966. He later returned to Central High as an ROTC Instructor and retired after 12 years. The time spent in training and touching the lives of many of Cheyenne's young were among the most rewarding to Roy. He considered it a privilege for the opportunity to offer wisdom and guidance in leadership to the future military leaders of our country. Roy was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Association of the U. S. Army, Retired Officers Association and the Wyoming Retired Officer's Association. He began his pursuit of a low handicap in golf in Long Beach, California where all of his siblings migrated to in the late 1920's and 30's. Roy was a well-known sight in downtown Long Beach, carrying a 300 pound block of ice on his shoulder, as he delivered ice to downtown businesses. In 1941 he received the call to serve his country and was inducted into the Army at Ft. MacArthur, San Pedro, California and thus his illustrious career of service began. He is survived by his wife, Shirley R. Wasson of Cheyenne; children Captain Gary C. Wasson (Ret., USN), of Virginia Beach, VA., G. Douglas Wasson of Colorado Springs, CO and Linda B. Baker of Tucson, AR, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Roy's six siblings are deceased. Visitation will be Monday noon to 8:00 p.m. at Schrader Funeral Home.
