Sam Field, 75, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center of a heart attack. Sam was born September 5, 1935, in Wheatland, Wyoming, the son of Earl E. and Dessie M.(Ireland) Field. His early years were spent in Wheatland, Hawk Springs, and Fort Laramie, Wyoming. At about age 12, Sam left home to work with horses in the Thomas Ranch between Ft. Laramie and Guernsey, Wyoming. Albert Thomas had noticed Sam's talent with horses and the knowledge he taught Sam was the basis for a lifetime of the love of working so successfully with horses and young people. In 1954, Sam enlisted in the U. S. Navy. Four years were spent aboard the U.S.S. Helena, the Flagship of the 7th Fleet. Sam's work ethic earned good conduct medals, China Service and an Outstanding Performance of Duty Award before he was discharged in 1958. Sam and Sharon Lass were married October 30, 1960 in Douglas, Wyoming. They became the proud parents of a son, Shadd, and daughter, Shelly. In 1964 Sam was one of the crew of fourteen to start at the WyCon Chemical Company plant west of Cheyenne. Sam rose up the ranks to become the Maintenance Planning Supervisor, the office he held for many years. Sam retired in 2001 and continued working his special talents with horses. Sam and his family, with friends, started the Cheyenne Wranglers 4-H Club. He especially enjoyed working with young people and their horses. Sam served as Laramie County 4-H Council President, Southeast Wyoming 4-H President, Wyoming State 4-H Horse Program President, and was one of the founders of the Wyoming State 4-H Horse Camp to help young people learn to work in all areas of horse management and training. He and his horse, "Jimmy" were beloved fixtures in the 4-H horse scene for many years. Sharon and Sam celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in October, 2010. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with their families. Sam is survived by his wife, Sharon; son, Shadd and wife Melanie; son-in-law, Bill James; brother, Floyd Thomas; sisters, Mary Ellen Wightman of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Ethel Freouf of Lingle, Wyoming, and Linda Hageman of Douglas, Wyoming; and his very special four grandchildren.
