The Rev. Ernest Fitzhugh, Jr.

Ernest John Fitzhugh, Jr., 87, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, was called from labor to rest on Thursday, April 5, 2018 in Cheyenne. Ernest was born December 18, 1930, in New Orleans, Louisiana to Ernest Fitzhugh, Sr. and Eva Butler. He came to Cheyenne serving in the Army Air Force in 1956 and was stationed at F.E. Warren Air Force Base. He became a member of the Second Baptist Church and served faithfully in many capacities: choir member, custodian, trustee, deacon, minister and associate pastor. He was ordained June 9, 1991, at Second Baptist Church under the pastorship of The Reverend Samuel Reid. The Reverend Fitzhugh became Pastor of Unity Missionary Baptist Church in February 1994 and served in that capacity until May 2017. He served as a chaplain with the Laramie County Sheriff's Department, and as a board member for Needs, Inc., Bethel Ministries, United Christian Minister Alliance and Cheyenne Minister Alliance. He also served faithfully in the Western States Baptist Convention and NAACP. Ernest married the love of his life, Catherine Jenkins, on January 28, 1989, at the Second Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; five children, Rose Stewart of Denver, CO, Carmen Lovett of Cheyenne, Michael Fitzhugh of Ft. Collins, CO, Helene Singleton of Cheyenne, and Ernesta Singleton of Abilene, TX; adopted son, James Smith of Cheyenne; two brothers-in-law, Jeffery W. Jenkins of San Diego, CA and Anthony Jenkins of Sacramento, CA; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mabel Zeno; brother, Lenox Reed; and the grandmother who raised him, Camille Brown. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home. A memory service will be celebrated on Friday, April 13th at 12:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Beth El Cemetery.
