Vialquin A. "Val" Valdez of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed away Monday, May 6, 2019 at the age of 96. Val was born on August 18, 1922 in Mora, New Mexico to Bealquin and Refugia (Urban) Valdez. Val married the love of his life, Loyola (Lucero) Valdez, on November 20, 1948, in Platteville, Colorado. He was a plumber for many years for the V.A. Medical Center. Val enlisted and served honorably in the United States Army during the European conflict of WWII, and earned many honors including the Army Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, P.O.W. Medal, and Bronze Star. Val was a member of St. Mary's Church, the former Latin American Club, VFW, American Legion, DAV, AMVETS, and the Knights of Columbus. His biggest motto was, "Never give up!" rang true when he received an honorary diploma from Central High School in 2015 and then honored as Distinguished Alumni from Central High School in 2018. Val is survived by his wife, Loyola Valdez; children, Mary Bea (Sam) Paiz, Lorraine (Bob) Salazar, Debbie (George Ortiz) Valdez-Ortiz, and Valerie (Fred) Roybal; grandchildren, Sarah Schabron (Phil), Anthony Paiz (Edie), Carly Cosand (Nick), Briana and Amber Roybal; great-grandchildren, Brynlee and Brielle Schabron; and numerous brothers and sisters. Val is preceded by his parents, Bealquin and Refugia; siblings, Moses Valdez, John P. Alcon, Fedelina Alcon, Anna Gallegos and Felix Alcon. A Rosary with a Funeral Liturgy to immediately follow will be celebrated on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Mary's Cathedral. A private graveside service will be held in Olivet Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the St. Joseph's Food Bank and to the HOPE scholarship fund.
